Popes, posters, pilgrims, pizzas and piazzas It is always exciting to go new places. Not least to Rome, the city most people in the West want to visit at least once in their lives. I remember very well when the first news about Pope John Paul II’s declining health was announced in January 2005. It certainly added extra excitement prior to my first visit to the Eternal City. I was granted a stay at the Scandinavian Club (Skandinavisk Forening) and should travel to Rome two months later. What would happen? Would the Pope, who survived both the Soviet Union and an attempt on his life, still be alive when I arrived? I was just in time.
